Description
1970 Lotus Elan + 2S
Well sorted example with
replacement galvanised chassis; rebuilt engine with uprated cams and many other
goodies tuned to give 154bhp - lots of fun potential here
Dating from June 1970, this angular, yet neat and pretty Elan +2S
is finished in Glacier White and features the proven 1.6-litre in-line
four-cylinder petrol engine which develops (as an earlier S2) c.118bhp in
original form driving the rear wheels via four-speed manual
transmission.
Inside, we find black vinyl
seating with the +2 for children in the back, Mahogany veneer dash, electric
windows, heated rear screen and retro-fit Kenwood radio/CD player with
six-speakers.
The car shows 28,982 miles (which
we assume to be 128,982 given the lack of supporting history) and largely
presents well bar the minor cosmetic imperfections pictured – its an old,
fibreglass car, cracks are common to find. The car was driven to the sale, but
we have not managed to successfully leave the car idling so do bare this in mind
if you aim to drive it away – it may need some tuning or a good run to get it
right.
The history file includes the V5C
showing six former keepers and it has been with our vendor since June 2021, an
original unstamped service booklet showing only the supplying dealer Sports
Motors of Manchester Ltd, the Kenwood manual, a photo of the car going up
Shelseley Walsh, brochure for the +2S, 12 old MOTs dating back to 2003 and
25,805 miles (revealing little usage in the last 19 years) and an info sheet on
the car. The car is of course MOT and Tax exempt.
The info sheet on the car reveals it to have had a replacement
galvanised steel chassis, new wiring loom, new dash, new sound proofing, new
black carpets and gearbox rebuild in 1992.
Later, in 2000, the engine was re-built by Paul Fisher (ex.BRM) being
balanced and lightened and Blue-printed. It was also phase two tuned to 154bhp
with an unleaded, ported and polished head with CPL 2 cams, adjustable vernier
pulleys, lightweight Cosworth cam buckets with large REC big valves, Powermax
BDA pistons with T/C sprockets and Vendervell competition
bearings.
The spec goes on to include a large
bore exhaust, twin Dellorto DHLA 40’s with braided fuel lines, Lucas sport
electronic ignition, AP racing clutch and uprated koni shocks and Spyder
springs.
Quite the spec, it must be properly
good fun when on song, on the right road!
